It was yet another morning when I sprayed perfume on my clothes and geared up for starting my day to fulfill my professional commitments. I started my car engine and zoomed across the street to reach my office, on time. What was left behind was a black soot in the air, emanated from the diesel engine of my car and aerosols which were spread in the air from the perfume I sprayed on my clothes, to give me a notion of freshness.
It's human nature, to move ahead in life as this is mandatory for the growth of mankind. However, in our zest to improve our existence, we have taken lot of steps forward and continuously meddled with Mother Nature. No doubt, advent of new technologies has made our lives easier but its reckless use, instead of complementing our lives has made it, our competitor. We are now being challenged by the might of our own inventions. We have become victims of our own action and now the time has come to rectify our mistakes and look towards innovations which could ensure our existence till the next millennium.
Energy is the center of all the cosmic actions and maintaining its balance across the environment, whether it is intrinsic or extrinsic, is required to keep cohesion between different entities. We have used non-renewable resources available to us at a very fast pace and now that we have depleted them all, we are looking towards clean and green resources of energy.
According to me, one step backwards shall propel us many steps forward in terms of finding a solution to this problem. If we refer to our Vedic scriptures, there are numerous references where effective utilization of renewable forms of energy has been mentioned. For e.g. According to the Rigveda, there are five elements that create the universe, of which, Vayu (wind) and Jal (water) were capable of producing a devastating amount of force which created the stars and the planets. Existence of ‘Tripura Vimana’ which was a large aircraft operated by power generated by solar rays had been mentioned in Vyaminaka Shastra. In Mahabharata, there has been a mention of ‘Indra’s Dart’ which operated via a circular reflector. When switched on, it produced a shaft of light which when focused on any target immediately destroyed it with its power.
This meant that our ancestors were far more advanced than us in terms of technology and applied their cerebrum more effectively to solve issues pertaining to daily life. According to me we have only, till date utilized the energy form of Agni or the fire and consumed tons and tons of natural resources, in turn depleting them, close to extinction.
Wind is the most powerful form of energy whose strengths are yet to be utilized by us. It has been established that a constant wind speed gives a maximum return in the form of energy. According to the studies, constant wind speed is available at around 1500 meters above the earth’s surface. Deploying lighter and portable wind mills through hot air balloons at that level would ensure better results and our resources could be utilized maximally.
Over the years, our country has given less importance to research and has become a follower to the technological innovations done by the western world. In my opinion, these innovations have done extreme harm to the natural environment and that has been the case with Ozone layer depletion, which was a result of excessive use of chlorofluorocarbons or the CFC’s. Air conditioner, which provides comfort to us, is one of the major culprits for depleting the ozone layer and exposing us to harmful ultra violet rays.
Can’t we replace artificial methods of air conditioning by modifying the architecture of modern houses? I am sure that our ancestors never used AC’s and refrigerators to keep themselves warm and maintain the longevity of food items.
‘Back to Basics’ is the need of the hour which had prompted me to use natural essence from rose petals as a perfume and cycle my way to office at least three days a week, to replace the dreaded effects of diesel.
